Floating Cinema: Unknown Waters
The 5th edition of “Floating Cinema: Unknown Waters” takes place from 23 August to 8 September, 2024, in the waters behind the island of Giudecca. The event features a floating stage where international and local filmmakers and performers present a series of screenings and performances. The stage is visible from private boats or a floating platform.
This year’s festival explores experimental approaches to moving images, bridging cinema and visual arts. It includes pre-cinema techniques, such as shadow theatre and the magic lantern, silent films with live soundtracks, film projections, and digital technologies. This edition pays tribute to Franco Basaglia and Franca Ongaro, celebrating the centenary of the Venetian psychiatrist. The programme focuses on visionary actions that challenge reality, exploring subjective perceptions and inner worlds, with an emphasis on individuals and their environments.
The programme begins on 23 August with a live performance by Lyra Pramuk, followed by the short film “Gli atti fondamentali. Cerimonia (1973)” by Superstudio, and the feature film “The Colour of Pomegranates” (1969) by Sergei Parajanov. Daily screenings start at 19:45, with boarding at 19:30 at Giudecca, Rio de Sant’Eufemia, Consorzio Venezia Sviluppo Ex “Cantiere Lucchese”. Reservations are required for both private boats and foot traffic via www.cinemagalleggiante.it.
