if walls could tell

The transnational project “if walls could tell”, by artist Mischa Kuball, explores how art institutions engage with broader social groups. Over two to four weeks, three symbolic museum walls will be installed in public spaces across Southeastern Europe, acting as temporary stages for local inhabitants to leave cultural and urban expressions. Once marked by the public, these walls will return to museums for preservation or further engagement.
The project examines the relationship between society and museums, questioning what happens when citizens, artists, and curators express themselves freely in public spaces, outside traditional museum settings. After the walls return to their institutions, public debates will be held to discuss the social issues reflected in the project.
“if walls could tell” launches near the future Ars Aevi Museum of Contemporary Art in Sarajevo on August 19, 2024, with subsequent installations and discussions in cities across Southeastern Europe, concluding in Düsseldorf.
