The inaugural edition of the Helsinki Biennial will open in summer 2020 in Vallisaari, an island in the Baltic Sea, under the curatorship of Pirkko Siitari and Taru Tappola, head curators of Helsinki Art Museum (HAM).

A list of 40 participants, both single artists or collectives, has just been announced. The exhibitors, coming from all over the world, are invited to confront the ever-pressing notion of interdependence, triggering a dialogue between individuals and groups of artists. Named “The Same Sea”, the Biennial will feature almost exclusively new commissions and site-specific projects, exhibited outside, along a cobbled path, and inside, in historical buildings rather than in residential empty ones.

The Biennial will gather stunning contemporary art from Finland and beyond for the first time in Vallisaari, to respond, and at the same time safeguard, the island’s unique natural landscape.
