Ján Mančuška (1972 – 2011): First Retrospective

During my trip to Bratislava last Friday I had the wonderful opportunity to have a preview tour of Ján Mančuška (1972 – 2011) First Retrospective exhibition at Kunsthalle Bratislava.

Known internationally (his art works are part of Centre Pompidou in Paris and MoMa in New York) but almost unknown at home, Ján Mančuška was born in Slovakia but lived and worked in Czech Republic. Ján entered the art scene in the second half of the 1990’s, his work is a remote continuation of Czechoslovak conceptual art of 1960’s and 1970’s, sadly he died very prematurely a the age of only 39 years.

He himself developed two main lines – post-conceptual artistic tradition, within which he discussed language in the process of speaking (literary language, language of video, performance or film) and on the other hand, his interest in communication grew. He was fascinated by real and existential stories. His installations and videos fill in organically the space of the Kunsthalle creating an engaging itinerary through his work which is displayed chronologically, with precise re-installation of groundbreaking works.
