Jonas Mekas Will Show his Photographs from WWII at documenta14

The Lithuanian – American artist/filmmaker was a refugee during WWII. He was captured by the Nazis and imprisoned in a labour camp in Germany.

This year’s documenta, “is very much focused on the refugee situation,” the artist stated in an interview, “so my photographs are connected directly with it, the problem of refugees, what’s happening right now in Europe, that we don’t talk about here [in the US].”

The photographs will be shown in Kassel and were taken between 1945 and 1948 when Mekas was living in the suburbs of the German town before being sent to the US.
