The artist Kader Attia has opened a new, three-story exhibition and events space in Paris today. The new venue, close to the Gare du Nord train station and cofounded with the restaurateur Zico Selloum, is called La Colonie.

The space will host workshops, conferences, lectures, and readings but details of the exhibition schedule are yet to be announced. Attia has emphasized that La Colonie is an independent project and receives no state subsidy.

Attia was born in France in 1970 and grew up in the suburbs of both Paris and Algeria. His experience of growing up in two different cultures informs his artistic practice. Recent exhibitions of his include “Sacrifice and Harmony,” 2016, at Museum Für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt, “The Injuries are Here,” 2015, at the Musée Cantonal des Beaux Arts de Lausanne in Switzerland, and “Culture, Another Nature Repaired,” 2014, at the Middelheim Museum in Antwerp
