My Art Guide Mexico City 2017 Editorial Committee
This second edition of My Art Guide Mexico has been developed thanks to an incredible editorial committee formed by Kerstin Erdmann (Director of OMR gallery), Daniel Garza-Usabiaga (curator, founder of Nixon and Zona Maco art director), Willy Kautz (curator) and Anuar Maauad (founder/director Casa Maauad). The committee has been working to select the best and most interesting art spaces and exhibitions in town while Fabiola Iza (curator) and Cecilia León de la Barra (curator of Zona Maco Diseño) have developed a special selection of un-represented artists based in México and a design-oriented itinerary around town.
Kerstin Erdmann (Bremen, Germany 1979) has a Masters in Art Studies from the Universidad Iberoamericana. She is the author of texts and conferences related to the contemporary art scene in Mexico and beyond. She has also acted as Curator for galleries and museums including Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil (Mexico City) and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca. Currently, she is Director of OMR Gallery. Founded in 1983, this is one of the main spaces for independent artistic practice in Mexico City, representing artists as Jose Dávila, Jorge Méndez Blake, Pia Camil and Candida Höfer.
Daniel Garza Usabiaga (born in 1975) has a PhD in Art History and Theory from the University of Essex and Postdoctoral studies at the Center of Aesthetic Research of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He has been curator of the Museum of Modern Art (Mexico City) and Chief Curator at the Museo Universitario del Chopo (Mexico City). He is an academic and independent curator and Artistic Director of Zona Maco.
Willy Kautz is a curator of contemporary art. He was chief curator at Museo Tamayo (2012-2013), where he presented the following exhibitions: “Hay más rutas que la nuestra”; “Matt Mullican: That World” and “Erick Beltrán: Atlas Eidolon”. He was Head of Visual Arts and curator of Casa del Lago Juan José Arreola (2010-2011); coordinator and curator of Casa Vecina (2010); and associate curator of the Museo Tamayo (2001-2005). He is currently a PhD candidate at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona.
Artist Anuar Maauad (born in 1984, Querétaro, Mexico) has a BS in Architecture, from the Universidad de Las Américas, Puebla, Mexico and a BFA from La Esmeralda (Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado), Mexico City, Mexico. He founded Casa Maauad in 2010: the non-profit, production-based entity, has a residency program which fosters the creation of solid relationships between international artists and the local art scene.
