After 16 years of leadership as director of The Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Philip Rylands will leave its role next June 2017. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation announced this surprising news yesterday.

Rylands joined the Guggenheim Foundation after Peggy Guggenheim’ s death, in 1979, working for the collection for 35 years, he saw the museum becoming one of the most influential and visited in the city of Venice; and also he oversaw the management of the Venice Biennale United States Pavilion, which Peggy Guggenheim Collection acquired in 1989.

A search for a substitute to take Rylands’s place will begin in the coming months.
