SOMMET Winter Salon of Contemporary Art to Set its First Edition in St. Moritz
SOMMET, a new Winter Salon for Contemporary Art, will present its first edition at the opulent Maloja Palace, a nineteenth-century hotel nestled in the sovereign mountains of the Engadine, near St. Moritz.
SOMMET aims to reimagine the long-established notion of an art fair by creating a new, exclusive experience, which connects collectors to the art works, artists and gallerists, in unique ways.
Founded by Will Ramsay and conceptualised by Giorgio Pace as artistic director, SOMMET will be an annual event occurring each February, presenting about 30 galleries dedicated to modern and contemporary art and featuring a specially-curated programme of collateral projects and happenings. Further details on the participating galleries and special projects will be announced in summer 2018.
The Maloja Palace will provide a sumptuous venue for SOMMET as its rooms and spaces will be completely emptied and reinterpreted with a special display, specifically designed for the participating galleries. Opened in 1884, the hotel was historically the largest and most modern hotel in the Alps at the time and has been home to a number of distinguished guests since opening its doors over 130 years ago. It has been a source of inspiration for regional artists, including Giovanni Segantini and Alberto and Giovanni Giacometti, who went on to become world-renown masters. In 2019, it will continue its contribution to the art scene, coalescing pioneering art and notable personalities under its historic roof.
