The 15th edition of Lo Schermo dell’Arte
The contemporary art and film festival is directed by Silvia Lucchesi and will take place at the Cinema La Compagnia in Florence and other venues in the city, offering a rich programme of screenings, including world and Italian premieres accompanied by in-theatre encounters, with the participation of over 40 artists, authors and curators.
This year’s artists will be Giorgio Andreotta Calò, Theaster Gates, Assaf Gruber, Lawrence Abu Hamdan and Philippe Parreno, among others, but also a series of others on whom the cinema has cast its gaze in the form of documentaries, to enter into the stories of Jesse Krimes, Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Hammons, the encounter between Marina Abramović and Ulay, or what has been defined as the aerospace art of Trevor Paglen.
A special focus instead for Rosa Barba, who will be presenting a preview of her new installation “Inside the Outset: Evoking a Space of Passage” (2021), produced by the Point Centre for Contemporary Art in Nicosia (Cyprus) with the support of the 3rd Italian Council and which narrates in just over half an hour the 180-kilometre Dead Zone that divides the north from the south of the island of Cyprus, plumbing the seabed and the wreck of a merchant ship from the 4th century BC, and areas of archaeological sites, to reinterpret the Mare Nostrum as a crossroads of cultures, a place of exchange and trade, but also of separation between the north and south of the world.
Finally, space will be given to the 11th edition of VISIO – European Programme on Artists’ Moving Images, curated by Leonardo Bigazzi, which will bring to the Festival the eight winners of an international call for artists under 35. The latter, selected from 188 applications, will be able to meet international producers and curators to try to develop a new production.
