Berenice Abbott
Berenice Abbott was an American photographer who played a key role in connecting the artistic communities of Paris and New York. After moving to Paris in the early 1920s, she worked as an assistant to Man Ray and gained recognition for her portraits of the Parisian avant-garde. Her work was featured in major international exhibitions throughout the 1920s and 1930s, and she held a solo exhibition at the Julien Levy Gallery in 1932. In 1970, Museum of Modern Art presented a comprehensive retrospective of her career. Abbott remained committed throughout her life to documentary practice and to championing Atget’s work, shaping generations of photographers through both her images and her critical vision.
