Avantgardo

Born in Mexico City in 1996, Avantgardo is a graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute. His work is characterised by the combination of different cultural devices to address desire and its manifestations within consumer culture. Avantgardo proposes “cheap luxury” and “pop simulacra” as concepts through which to understand the constitutive role of consumption and spectacle in the formation of subjectivities.

His process takes the readymade of the present moment as a starting point, treating purchase as a form of research into the commodification of desire, and consumption as a means of communication to reinterpret parody and recreate products as testimonies of consumer society and contemporary life.

In sum, Avantgardo’s research explores the phenomenology articulated in Madonna’s aphorism: “Cause everybody’s living in a material world and I am a material girl, you know that we are living in a material world and I am a material girl”.
