Artist

Mónica Castillo

Born in Mexico City, 1961 and lives in Mexico City and Oaxaca

During the 80’s and 90’s Mónica Castillo enjoyed a successful career as a painter, tackling issues related to the representation of the self through biographical narratives related to the emancipation from the cultural education on gender, race, and class. After growing tired of the limitations imposed on her by the medium and by the art world’s preconceived expectations –to perform a certain role as a female artist from a Latin American country–, she decided to devote her practice to the organization of learning situations and of collective creation in specific contexts. In 2014 Castillo co-founded Lugar Común-Nueva Patria, a project that tackles culture as common good through community-based processes.
