Caterina Frongia

Caterina Frongia (born in Oristano, Sardinia) is an Italian textile artist and designer based in Bologna.

After moving to Bologna at the age of eighteen, she studied at the DAMS (Department of Arts, Music and Performing Arts) at the University of Bologna, graduating with a thesis exploring the relationship between cinema and psychoanalysis. She subsequently worked for several years as a fashion design assistant at Massimo Osti Studio, founded by the visionary designer behind Stone Island and C.P. Company.

In 2020, Frongia returned to her family’s textile heritage, reviving a small weaving workshop in Sardinia and establishing her eponymous studio. Working with traditional hand-weaving techniques, she creates one-of-a-kind rugs and tapestries that merge craftsmanship with storytelling. Her early works took the form of “biographical textiles,” translating the personal histories of individual clients into woven compositions.

Today, her practice investigates memory, identity, landscape, and the emotional dimension of domestic objects, balancing contemporary design with Sardinian textile traditions.

In 2021, she received the EDIT Napoli Seminario Award with Gimme Shelter. Since then, her work has been presented internationally at institutions, galleries, and design festivals including BASEL SOCIAL CLUB, Collectible New York, Dutch Design Week, Lake Como Design Festival, Artemest Gallery New York, 10 Corso Como, and the Regional Museum of Textile Art in Samugheo.

In 2025, she collaborated with MSGM on a women’s Fall/Winter knitwear capsule collection and joined the We Mediterranean collective.

Her work has been featured in leading international publications including Domus, Elle Decor, Marie Claire Maison, Interni, Archiproducts, and Elle Decoration NL.
