Pedro Coronel

Coronel Pedro was a painter, sculptor, draughtsman, and printmaker from Zacatecas, born in 1923. He studied painting and sculpture at La Esmeralda, where he developed a style rooted in abstraction. Part of his artistic training took place in Paris. In Mexico, his first solo exhibition was held at Galería Proteo in 1954, and he later exhibited in France, Italy, Japan, the United States, and Brazil.

In 1984 he received the National Prize for Arts and Sciences. He died in 1985 at the age of 62, and a posthumous tribute was held at the Palacio de Bellas Artes. His work has become a crucial point of reference in the study of post-muralist Mexican art.
