Born and raised in Italy, and educated in Italy and Sweden, she began her career as a dancer in German theatres, before moving to New York to study the “post- modern” and work with Douglas Dunn. Years later, after a long stretch of nomadic teaching
in Europe, she settled in Stockholm, founded the company ccap, and began to choreograph. Caprioli’s work as a choreographer includes performances, installations, publications, trans-disciplinary research and community projects. She has shared these with audiences of all ages and abilities, from different backgrounds and social strata– and from Farsta (Sweden) all the way to the Tate Modern (London), MoMA PS1 (New York), KINDL (Berlin) and beyond. Caprioli has choreographed
for 59°North in Stockholm and the GöteborgsOperans Danskompani. Further afield,
she has engaged in cultural exchanges with England, South Africa and Indonesia, as well as producing festivals (such as Talking Dancing and Movement is a Woman), publishing several books and leading research, symposia, conferences and other projects. She has been a professor at Uniarts, Stockholm, and a guest at Harvard University, Yale University and Irvine University, Los Angeles. In 2022 she was a Mercator Visiting Professor at Freie Universität Berlin. Caprioli’s accolades include
the Cullberg Prize and the prestigious Per Ganneviks stipendium. In 2021, the government of Sweden awarded her the Royal Gold Medal Illis quorum meruere labores for her outstanding contributions to Swedish culture, science and society. In 2022, Tanz im August festival, Berlin honoured her legacy by presenting ONCE OVER TIME – a retrospective of her work.
