Robert Doisneau

Robert Doisneau was a French photographer best known for his poetic and humanist images of everyday life in Paris. Born in Gentilly in 1912, he became one of the leading figures of postwar Humanist photography, capturing spontaneous moments with warmth, humor, and empathy.

His work often focused on ordinary people and urban scenes, revealing quiet beauty in the banal and the fleeting. Among his most iconic images is Le Baiser de l’Hôtel de Ville (1950). Doisneau’s photographs have been widely exhibited and published worldwide, securing his legacy as one of the most beloved photographers of the twentieth century.
