Artist

Tjorg Douglas Beer

The work of Tjorg Douglas Beer, born in Lübeck, Germany, 1973, takes shape as anarchic statements that, through collage, painting, sculpture and installation, assemble possible worlds. The use of everyday materials and images drawn from popular culture emerges in his practice with a strident, psychedelic force, evoking intergenerational dialogues between history, music, literature, technology and the urban landscape. The connection between urban daily life and the artist’s intimate space becomes a set of fragments through which to understand the world. Perhaps for this reason, his work is also closely linked to the desire to create projects and exhibitions that bring together other artists and foster community encounter, such as The Forgotten Bar Project Berlin, Galerie Utopia in Berlin/Athens, and The Berlin Kreuzberg Biennale.

Beer’s work has been presented in major international museums and galleries, including Tate Modern, London and Palais de Tokyo, Paris.

He has held solo exhibitions at Kunsthaus Hamburg, Germany; Kunstraum Innsbruck, Austria; Stadsgalerij Heerlen, Netherlands; Institute for Modern Art Nuremberg, Germany; Hokkaido Contemporary Art Institute, Sapporo, Japan; and Mitchell-Innes & Nash, New York.

His work is also part of public and private collections.

Beer has participated in various biennials, including Artgenda 2002 in Hamburg; Manifesta 11 – European Biennial of Contemporary Art, Zurich (2016); Socle du Monde Biennale 2017 in Herning, Denmark; and The Berlin Kreuzberg Biennale (2012). He has developed projects such as Galerie im Regierungsviertel Berlin, the Berlin Kreuzberg Biennale and Galerie Utopia. He has collaborated with galleries including Mitchell-Innes & Nash, New York; Cardi Gallery, London; Galerie Mikael Andersen, Copenhagen; Produzentengalerie, Hamburg; Galerie Thoman, Vienna; and Poggiali Galerie, Florence.

Tjorg Douglas Beer lives and works between Hamburg and Athens.
