Robert Janitz
Born in Alsfeld, 1962 and lives in New York, USA
Robert Janitz was born in Alsfeld, Germany, in 1962, and studied Art History and Sanskrit at the University of Marburg. From 1994 to 2008 he taught at the University of Paris VIII and at the Higher School of Fine Arts in Cherbourg. He held his first solo exhibition at Gallerie Valleix in 1996 and has since presented more than thirty solo shows in Paris, Berlin, New York, London, Los Angeles, Brussels, Brooklyn, Mexico City, Istanbul, Seoul and Chicago.
Janitz made his Latin American debut with a simultaneous programme at Casa Gilardi (“Best of All Worlds”, curated by Gianni Jetzer) and at Galería Archivo Colectivo (“Work, Story, Pleasure”, curated by Christian Barragán). His work has been featured in publications such as “Contemporary Painting” (Thames & Hudson, 2021), “Frozen Gesture” (Hirmer, 2019), “Geometria figurativa” (Silvana Editoriale, 2017) and “Painting Now” (Thames & Hudson, 2015). He is also the subject of four monographic titles: “Robert Janitz: Made in New York 2020–2010” (Distanz, Berlin, 2021), “Ex Libris” (Rainoff, NY, 2014), “Robert Janitz” (Le 10 Neuf, Paris, 2006) and “Robert Janitz at the Anahuacalli” (Canada, SAENGER Galería, Sevil Dolmaci, 2023).
His work forms part of numerous private and institutional collections, including the Carole Server Collection, Collection VR d’Afflaux, Collezione Maramotti, Hall Art Foundation, Collectors Room Berlin/Olbricht Foundation, Mediolanum Art LLC, the Peter and Jamie Hort Collection, the Roberto Toscano Collection, the Beredzvin Collection, Tomio Koyama, the Zarur Collection, the Suro Collection, the Warwick Collection, the Goetz Collection and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Janitz is represented by Canada (New York), Sevil Dolmaci (Istanbul), König (Berlin, London and Seoul) and Saenger Galería (Mexico City). After living in New York for more than a decade, between 2009 and 2020, he now resides in Mexico City.
