Jou Morales

Jou Morales (b. 1990, Oaxaca de Juárez, Mexico) has a BA in Plastic and Visual Arts from the Universidad Autónoma Benito Juárez of Oaxaca (2011–2015) and completed the Clinics for the Specialisation in Contemporary Art for Oaxaca (CEACO) at the Curtiduría Espacio Contemporáneo (2015–2016). He is co-founder and member of YOPE projects space, dedicated to the diffusion of local, national and international contemporary art.

He has exhibited his work at Musée International des Arts Modestes (MIAM)/UK, Friche la Belle de Mai/UK, Kurimanzutto Gallery/CDMX, Instituto de Artes Gráficas de Oaxaca (IAGO)/OAX, among others. In 2020 and 2023 he received the Young Creators grant from the Sistema de Apoyos a la Creación y Proyectos Culturales (SACPC), formerly FONCA.

His work is a mixture of imaginaries, references, sounds, and strident and hypnotic colours of contemporary culture, posed as interpretations and/or premonitions of multiple events where amorphous beings rise, self-construct, pulsate, mutate and collapse, carrying the weight of their history as a transversal narrative of our historicity.

His most recent exhibitions include Mortero, Villa Magdalena, San Sebastián País Vasco, Spain; Mobile Suit, Campeche, Mexico City, Mexico; Llanero, Residencia 797, Guadalajara, Mexico; Atlas de la Loma, Kurimanzutto, Mexico City, Mexico; Carroñero, Instituto de Artes Gráficas de Oaxaca (IAGO), Oaxaca, Mexico; among others.
