Karina Bisch
Born in Paris, 1974 and lives in Paris
Karina Bisch was born in 1974 in Paris, where she lives and works. Since her studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, from which she graduated in 2000, and her residency at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam in 2005 and 2006, she has developed a unique artistic vocabulary using numerous references to geometric art, but also to fashion or dance, elaborating a particular sensitivity to modernity. The artist closely examines the aesthetics of the historical avant-gardes, which she distorts and adapts to suit her needs. Although Karina Bisch considers herself primarily a painter, her work also includes sculpture, installation and performance. She is interested in the relationship between art and craft and it is in the context of her performances that she makes her first costumes. In 2012, she started a project entitled “Painting for Living” which, within her practice, proposes a path closer to craft with wearable artworks: scarf, dress, cushion, bracelet. It is about wearing the painting, being in the painting.
Through her works and performances with a sometimes theatrical tone, Karina Bisch, always irreverent and pragmatic, re-enacts her 20th century by diverting the presumed universality of the canons of modernism.
Presented in renowned institutions in France and Europe, Karina Bisch’s works can be found in the following collections: West Collection in Pennsylvania – USA, Fonds national d’Art Contemporain, Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, Frac Aquitaine, frac île-de-france, Frac Franche-Comté, Fonds municipal de la Ville de Paris.
