Zsigmond Károlyi

Born in Budapest, 1952 and lives in Budapest

Coming to age in seventies conceptualism, Károlyi has been an important figure of the scene as an artist and teacher. He studied painting at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in Budapest between 1971-1976; however, his real artistic education happened in a bar next door, where a group of young artists followed their own curricula informed by iconic conceptual artists of the time. Perhaps this provided the impetus for him to pay special attention to art education: since the mid-seventies, he has taught in various institutions, becoming one of the first progressive professors in his alma mater after the political changes where now he is head of the painting department.
Through alternating periods of figurativity and abstraction, his paintings of moderate hues, his image sequences, films, photos, and actions have dealt with questions of art and painting theory, analyzing the dichotomies between vision and perception, real and artificial image, the panel painting and its environment.
