Christopher Kulendran Thomas
Born in London, 1979 and lives in London
Thomas’ studies comprehend the MFA Fine Art –Goldsmiths College, University of London (2012), PG Dip Photography – London College of Communication, University of the Arts London (2008), BA Media & Communication – Goldsmiths College, University of London (2001).
Thomas acquires drawings, paintings and sculptures from Sri Lanka’s most prominent galleries by leading contemporary Sri Lankan artists and recalibrates them into intriguing mixed media pieces that adhere to Western, rather than Asian, notion of the contemporary. Thomas’ work is not only a comment on notions of art market internationalism and the definition of contemporary, modern, postmodern, historical, Western and Eastern, but fundamentally addresses how a burgeoning art market can be a response to and a symbol of political oppression, state sponsored exploitation and corporate globalization.
