José Kuri

José Kuri is the founder and co-owner, together with his wife Mónica Manzutto, of kurimanzutto, established in Mexico City in 1999 and in New York in 2018. Originally conceived with artist Gabriel Orozco in the late 1990s in New York, the gallery emerged in response to the lack of institutional support for contemporary art in Mexico. Its first exhibition, Economía de Mercado, took place in a local market, setting the tone for a nomadic and adaptive model.

Initially operating from the founders’ apartment, kurimanzutto opened its first permanent space in 2003, relocating in 2008 to its current venue in San Miguel Chapultepec. More than a commercial gallery, it was conceived as a platform for artistic experimentation and dialogue. It has played a key role in supporting the careers of both Mexican and international artists, prioritising creative innovation and critical engagement.

In 2018, the gallery opened a project space in New York, followed by a fully fledged location in Chelsea in 2022, further expanding its international presence.

Today, kurimanzutto represents 44 international artists working across diverse disciplines. Its roster includes founding members such as Gabriel Orozco, Carlos Amorales, Damián Ortega and Abraham Cruzvillegas, alongside artists such as Sarah Lucas, Nairy Baghramian, Danh Vo, Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Leonor Antunes. Through its dynamic programming, kurimanzutto continues to realise ambitious projects, maintaining its position as an innovator within the international art world.
