Artist

Ilán Lieberman

Born in Mexico City, 1969

Troubled by the sociopolitical landscape of Mexico and its inequality, Ilan Lieberman develops projects in which –either through mechanical means or by his amazing manual dexterity – he replicates images related to traumatic issues that belong to visual ecosystems of particular relevance. Thereafter, the artist circulates the resulting aesthetic materials in the press, in the urban context, or in art spaces in order to provoke reactions in the social organism, even if minor and subtle ones. Lieberman’s projects seek to highlight the complexity of the ethical and political implications existing in the depiction of social stereotypes. Following this interest, his latest works question the (in)visibility of Mexico’s indigenous populations by recurring to the gathering of testimonials, video installations, and sculptural work.
