Artist

Luis López Loza

A Mexican painter, sculptor, printmaker and academic, he studied at several institutions, including the UNAM, the Escuela de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado “La Esmeralda”, the Centro Superior de Artes Aplicadas and the Pratt Graphic Art Center in New York. He held his first exhibition at the Galería de Artes Visuales in 1959 and has since presented numerous solo shows in Mexico, the United States, Japan and Spain.

In 1976, invited by the University of Strumica, he undertook a study trip to Yugoslavia. The following year, he received the National Graphic Arts Prize. He is a member of the Academia de las Artes de México.

As Juan García Ponce noted, López Loza’s works — encompassing painting, sculpture and printmaking — “renounce all unity in favour of the inexhaustible combinatory capacity of forms.” In 2010, he was awarded the National Prize for Arts and Sciences.
