Lukas Gschwandtner
Lukas Gschwandtner (b. 1995, Salzburg) lives and works in Vienna. Gschwandtner’s practice focuses on the human scale and its interaction with space, furniture and objects in both historical and contemporary contexts. He examines the body language suggested by a piece of furniture, an artwork or even a space, and how that suggestion can be disrupted or repurposed through use. His sculptural works extract simplified forms from the paintings and artworks he references; their historical, class and gender contexts become more abstract, creating space for personal interpretations and experiences.
Gschwandtner holds a BA in Art and Architecture from Chelsea College of Arts, London, UK, and previously trained in accessory design and traditional leatherworking at the Modeschule im Schloss Hetzendorf in Vienna, Austria. He has exhibited at Lant Street in London, UK, curated by Jermaine Gallacher; at Maniera in Brussels, Belgium (2021); and at Art Basel (2021), Basel, Switzerland. He has presented work in Paris, France, including at PAD Paris in 2021 and 2022.
Gschwandtner has collaborated with fashion houses such as Lemaire and Fendi in Rome, and has contributed to several scenography projects, including the SS24 Acne Studios show during Paris Fashion Week. He has participated in the Persona Residency Exchange Programme in Monterrey, Mexico, funded by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and most recently at Numeroventi and Bitossi in Florence, Italy.
