Matías Armendáris
Matias Armendaris (b. 1990) is an Ecuadorian artist living and working in Mexico City. He is part of the collaborative artist duo ASMA. He holds an MFA from the Painting and Drawing Department of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a BFA in drawing and printmaking from Emily Carr University (2015). He has exhibited in solo and group shows internationally in Canada, Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Slovenia, Argentina and the United States.
His work uses sculpture, drawing, printmaking, writing and installation to explore the paradigm of belonging, aiming to generate an affective space for plural identity. His practice is concerned with finding ways to activate thing–human relationships through objects that suggest a past, opening poetic readings of multiple possible futures. The objects echo artefacts of anthropology, archaeology and geology, as well as fantastical and magical relics.
