Mieke Groot
Mieke Groot was born in 1949 in Alkmaar, the Netherlands. From 1969 to 1974, she studied in the Jewellery Department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, and from 1974 to 1976 she continued her studies in the Glass Department at the same institution. Her first professional experience began in 1976 with Richard Meitner in Amsterdam, immediately after completing her studies. From 1978 to 1981, she worked as a freelance designer for Royal Leerdam, and in 1981 she became Head of the Glass Department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.
Throughout her career, Mieke Groot has continued to teach as a guest lecturer at the Musée-Atelier du Verre in Sars-Poteries, France, and has led numerous international masterclasses on glass. From 2009 to 2013, she was the Artistic Director of North Lands Creative Glass in Lybster, Scotland. Following this experience, she travelled to Senegal, where she initiated the project “Works from Dakar” in collaboration with the Caterina Tognon Gallery in Venice (2014–2015). In 2017, she was a speaker at “Bijoux” at the Norton Museum in West Palm Beach, Florida, USA.
Groot has participated in many notable exhibitions, including: “Design Miami | Basel” with Caterina Tognon Gallery, Basel, Switzerland (2019) and “Sieraad, International Jewellery Art Fair – Marjan Unger Tribute”, Amsterdam, Netherlands (2019).
Before 2010, Groot held numerous important solo and group exhibitions, beginning with her debut at the Museum Aemstelle in Amstelveen, Netherlands, in 1974.
