Artist
Nuria Montiel
Born in Mexico City, 1982 and lives in Mexico City
The work of Nuria Montiel makes of etching and engraving its preferred media and employs strategies derived from situations of collective participation in public space. From a very early stage in her career onwards, she has quoted the aesthetic of the gráfica popular (popular graphic) movement and borrowed visual strategies from social demonstrations. Working together with indigenous populations, her recent projects meditate on language and the sense of belonging to a place, asking if any of them can survive colonial processes and their accompanying power structures. How might these contexts may be experienced today is the central question of her production.
