Lives in Seoul

Hwayeon Nam
Hwayeon Nam

She studied Fine Arts at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York  and Korea National University of Arts in Seoul, Korea. Nam’s practice traces cultural identity through its objects and archives; she captures through choreographic movements the various phenomena surrounding the social systems that created these remnants, uncovering how objects mirror their time and space; and revealing the structures of cultural reproduction related to human desires. With a focus on performance and video, her work lies in the linguistic performativity of questioning contemporary values and temporal notions of the present. Nam does this by critically examining the stories and context of imperialism, delving into the stories contained in museum collections, the history of colonial annexations, and the advent of the natural sciences especially astronomy and flora and fauna. Her practice engages the past by tracing the movements embedded in these histories; Nam’s solo exhibitions include “Imjingawa” (Audio Visual Pavilion, 2017) and “Time Mechanics” (Arko Art Center, Seoul, 2015). She has participated in group exhibitions “Reenacting History” (MMCA, Gwacheon, 2017), “wellknown unknown” (Kukje Gallery, Seoul, 2016), “All the World’s Future” (Venice Biennale, Venice, 2015), and “Nouvelle Vague” (Palais de Tokyo, Paris, 2015). She has also produced performances including “Orbital Studies” (MMCA, Seoul, 2018), “Dimensions Variable” (Festival Bo:m, 2013), and “Garden in Italy” (Festival Bo:m, 2012).
