Nazim Ünal Yilmaz
Born in Trazbon, 1981 and lives in Istanbul, Vienna
The core of Nazim Ünal Yilmaz artistic exploration are gender issues, personal freedom, and queer themes, all set in dreamlike atmospheres with a strong presence of disturbing and sometimes unsettling elements.
Their works navigate the boundary between consciousness and unconsciousness, spontaneity and reflection, relationship and emotion, public and private space. Yilmaz invites the viewer to actively participate in the painting experience, freeing them from the usual role of passive recipient and encouraging them to decode the composition.
Some of their solo exhibitions include “Theological Time,” “MeanLandscape” at Gallery Exile in Vienna (2020), “Fieberblasenmond” at Galleria PSM in Berlin (2018), “Sibel Beauty Parlor” at Sanatorium in Istanbul (2017), and “Hotel Principles” at Funktion Room in London (2015). Yilmaz has also been featured in various exhibitions at significant galleries and museums, such as “OpenLandscape,” curated by Angels Miralda, at Tallinn Art Hall, Tallinn (2020), and “Making Normative Orders,” curated by Fanti Baum, Britta Peters, and Dr. Sabina Witt, at Frankfurter Kunstverein, Frankfurt (2012).
