Artist

Henrik Olesen

Born in Esbjerg, 1967 and lives in Berlin, Germany

Henrik Olesen studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1995 to 2007.
Project 94 at the Museum of Modern Art in early 2011 was Olesen’s first U.S. solo museum show, in which, according to Valery Oisteanu in The Brooklyn Rail, “Olesen probes homosexuality’s criminalization, past and present, through the appropriation of source materials and contextual shifts”.
In his artwork Olesen uses posters, sculptures or architectural interventions. He often works with knowledge that is in the public domain yet remains largely excluded from public discussion. Over the last three years, the artist has researched imagery of homo-social and homoerotic depictions in art and cultural history, as well as reports from and biographies of homosexual artists that attempt to partially reconstruct a lost or deleted history.
