Renata Petersen
Born in Guadalajara in 1993, Renata Petersen’s practice explores religious and social themes, infused with a sharp sense of dark humour. Through vignettes that closely engage with comic and cartoon languages, her work moves from satirical reinterpretations to examinations of phenomena with deep resonance in popular culture, addressing subjects such as sects, urban legends, gender roles, contemporary sexuality, and the subjectivity inherent in the notion of “bad taste”.
Her pieces reveal a particular interest in weaving referential nods to artists such as Mike Kelley, Sarah Lucas, Raymond Pettibon and Kim Gordon together with her own fascination with pornography, scatology and hyper-consumerist trash television, using production methods rooted in traditional artisanal techniques from Guadalajara, such as ceramics and blown glass.
