Alejandro Pintado

Alejandro Pintado has been working professionally as an artist for almost two decades, adding to his biography a substantial list of solo and group exhibitions in both public and private institutions in Mexico, England, Spain, France and Russia.

In recent years, his research has focused on the historical memory of the landscape and its transformation over time. To this end, he has undertaken the task of editing and then transforming the work of artists such as Claude Lorrain (1600–1682), Moritz Rugendas (1802–1858) and José María Velasco (1840–1912). Pintado’s interest extends beyond the aesthetic and formal qualities of these landscape painters; he is concerned with the cosmogony of the eras in which they worked. Historical distance enables a broader understanding of the socio-political events of the past and offers a clearer perspective on the period in which the works were produced. Pintado selects elements from these historical views—often pristine landscapes that are now unattainable—and intervenes in them with contemporary objects. This juxtaposition of dissonant elements alludes to the notion of modernity, in which all periods of history coexist simultaneously.

In Pintado’s works, the relationship between nature and artificiality remains deliberately ambiguous: it is often unclear whether the landscape dominates the artificial elements or whether nature has overtaken constructed environments. These are some of the reflections put forward by an artist unafraid to demonstrate his ability to recreate aesthetically and conceptually challenging compositions that navigate between the present, the past and the future.
