Rodrigo Ortiz Monasterio
A Mexican curator with ties to California—where he studied at the California College of the Arts—Rodrigo Ortiz Monasterio often organises exhibitions that juxtapose alternate realities, combining the pristine idealism of Minimalism and the promise of Modernism with the harsh consequences that sweeping ideologies impose on everyday urban life.
This year, Monasterio curated “Cuevas Civilizadas” at Ladera Oeste in Guadalajara, featuring artists Leonor Antunes, Mario García Torres, Roma Cortina and Rometti Costales. His past projects include two iterations of the “Passersby” series at Museo Jumex: one centred on Polish theatre director Jerzy Grotowski, who visited Mexico in the 1980s, and another exploring the work of American writer and architecture critic Esther McCoy and the parts of the country she encountered during her travels through Mexico in the 1950s.
