Jérôme Sans
Jérôme Sans is widely recognised for shaping, directing, and reimagining spaces dedicated to art and creative life. Throughout his career, he has introduced new models that approach art and culture from democratic, accessible, and alternative perspectives. Considered one of the most inventive and unconventional figures in the contemporary art world, his innovations have been echoed internationally—most notably at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, which he co-founded and co-directed for its first six years alongside Nicolas Bourriaud. He later went on to lead Beijing’s Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) from 2008 to 2012.
Alongside his institutional leadership, Sans has an extensive publishing career. He has served as creative director and editor-in-chief of the French cultural magazine L’Officiel Art, and is a regular contributor to Purple. As a curator, he has organised major international exhibitions, including the Taipei Biennial (2000) and the Lyon Biennale (2005), as well as significant solo shows such as Li Qing at Fondazione Prada Rong Zhai in Shanghai (2019), Erwin Wurm at the Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade (2022), Alicja Kwade’s “Au cours des mondes” on Place Vendôme in Paris (2022), the Noor Riyadh Festival in Saudi Arabia (2023), Frieder Burda Museum (2024), and Doug Aitken at Borusan Contemporary (2024–25).
He has also played a central role in the development of Lago Algo in Mexico City (2021–2023), where he curated collective exhibitions including “Shake your Body” (2022) and “Desert Flood” (2023).
