Francis Upritchard

Born in New Plymouth, 1976 and lives in London

Francis Upritchard is a London-based contemporary artist, born in New Zealand in 1976. In 2009 she represented New Zealand at the Venice Biennale. In developing her artistic practice, Upritchard often combines found objects with her own hand-made additions, but she is also known for her sculptures that replicated shrunken heads, resting on display cabinets or mounted on small pedestals, in reference to the tattooed shrunken heads made by New Zealand’s indigenous Māori.
