Wayne McGregor
Born in Stockport, 1970
Wayne McGregor studied dance at Bretton Hall College, University of Leeds, and later in New York. In 1992, he was appointed Choreographer-in-Residence at The Place in London and founded his own company, Random Dance (now Company Wayne McGregor). In 2002, the company became the first Resident Company at the newly opened Sadler’s Wells.
In 2006, McGregor became the first Resident Choreographer of The Royal Ballet to come from a contemporary dance background. In 2021, he was appointed Director of Dance for the Venice Biennale, a role he held until 2024.
He served as Professor of Choreography at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and held honorary doctorates from Plymouth University (Doctor of Science), the University of Leeds and the University of Chester (Doctor of Letters), and the University of the Arts London. He was also a member of the Circle of Cultural Fellows at King’s College London and received an Honorary Fellowship from the British Science Association in 2017.
In 2018, McGregor topped the dance category in The Progress 1000, a celebration of London’s most influential people. In 2021, he was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Prix de Lausanne.
