Yasushisa Kohyama
Born in Shigaraki, 1936
Yasuhisa Kohyama was born in 1936 in Shigaraki, an important Japanese centre for the production of ceramics. At the age of fifteen, he began his career as a ceramist, working in one of the most important ceramics factories, Oumi Kagaku Touki. In 1969 he opened his own studio and began experimenting with the Anagama kiln. In 1973 he had his first solo show at the Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Department in Tokyo. Over the years he has exhibited in solo shows in London, Sydney, Frankfurt and Tokyo. His works are displayed in important museums, such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Art and Design in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
