Yvonne Venegas
Yvonne graduated from the International Center of Photography in New York and received her MFA from the University of California, San Diego, in 2009. She has exhibited her work in solo and group shows across Mexico, the United States, Canada, Peru, Brazil, Spain, France, Poland and Russia, including solo exhibitions at Shoshana Wayne Gallery, Santa Monica; Casa de América, Madrid; the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego; the University Museum of Contemporary Art (MUAC), Mexico City; Diaz Contemporary, Toronto; and Baxter, New York.
In 2010 she received the Magnum Expression Award, granted by Magnum Photos, as well as the National Creators’ Grant from the Mexican Cultural and Arts Fund (FONCA), on two occasions. In 2016 she was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship for her project “San Pedro Garza García”.
In 2020 she received both the Jumex Grant and the Cuervo Acquisition Prize to continue her project “El lápiz de la naturaleza”, a portrait series dedicated to the study of pose. She was also awarded the Sistema Nacional de Creadores Grant for her current project “Mar de Cortés”, a subjective documentary photography project produced between 2021 and 2023.
Her work is held in collections in the United States, Mexico and France, including the permanent collections of SFMOMA, the Museum of Photographic Arts San Diego, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the Haudenschild Collection, Fundación Televisa, Centro de la Imagen (Mexico City), Moisés Cosío, Alumnos 47, Jason Reitman and Anna Gamazo de Abello, among others. She has published four monographs with RM Editorial, Barcelona: “María Elvia de Hank” (2010), “Inédito” (2012), “Gestus” (2015) and “San Pedro Garza García” (2019).
Yvonne lives and works in Mexico City.
