Jimmy Ngui, Teacher and Artist, Selected Paintings from 1966 to 2014

The Arts House, 1 Old Parliament Lane

During his long career as an educator and teacher, Jimmy Ngui‘s legacy is imprinted in the hearts and minds of his students with his blend of strong work ethic and humour.

As Project Director at the Curriculum Development Institute of Singapore, he led his team to produce the first comprehensive set of visual arts textbooks for Singapore’s primary and secondary schools, which formed the basis for visual arts education in Singapore from 1983 to about 1995.

Throughout his career in education, Ngui also painted and created visual notes. This exhibition, titled Jimmy Ngui, Teacher and Artist, Selected Paintings from 1966 to 2014 presents his works that encapsulate his joy in observing and documenting the landscape before him, both locally and abroad.

His works focus on objects and landscapes that to him, possess character, such as old shophouses, river scenes and the activities of subsistence fishing in early Singapore. He is also inspired by settings like bold flourishes in the natural landscape sparked by flower blossoms, seasonal colour changes and bushfires. His immaculately composed paintings often have an ambiguous character to them.

Jimmy Ngui is a member of the pioneer generation who deeply believes in sharing experiences and memories. This exhibition is an important avenue for him to interact with the audience.
