Neither a traditional museum nor a warehouse, Schaulager is a new type of art institution, serving as the storage facility for the collection of the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation. In contrast to traditional art repositories, the artworks at Schaulager are stored in an open and visible manner, guaranteeing its accessibility.
The works in the collection of the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation are regularly exhibited in the Kunstmuseum Basel. When they are not on show, they are kept at Schaulager, where they can still be seen by specialists. Primarily intended for an expert audience, Schaulager is open by appointment to researchers, restorers, scholars, and students.
Schaulager also addresses a wider public with major exhibitions of contemporary art and hosting other events.
