Museo Anahuacalli
A museum conceived by Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo to host over 50,000 pre-Columbian pieces of art.
Since the thirties, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo harbored the idea of passing on to the people of Mexico two museums Museo Anahuacalli, and La Casa Azul. The Diego Rivera Anahuacalli Museum, more commonly known as the Museo de Anahuacalli, is located in the southern part of Mexico City. The museum was conceived and created by the muralist Diego Rivera, who, driven by his deep interest in Mexican culture, amassed a collection of over 60,000 pre-Hispanic artefacts throughout his life. The building, designed by Rivera himself and constructed from volcanic rock, was intended to house and preserve this collection. It was completed after the artist’s death by architects Juan O’Gorman and Heriberto Pagelson, along with Rivera’s daughter, Ruth.
