Body Splits
SALTS presents a group show Body Splits celebrating its 10 Years. The exhibition explores the representation of the body in contemporary art practices.
For a long time, artists have challenged the traditional image of the body, both as subject and object, to explore and reflect upon identity. In recent years, we have been witnessing a shift in the representation of the body in artistic practices, supported by a resurgence of figuration in painting, sculptures and other media. This is visible among a new generation of artists who approach the body – sometimes dismembered, distorted, augmented, remodelled – as a way to explore questions both personal and political within the cultural realm. Planned to scatter across SALTS’s garden and several pavilions specially built for the occasion, the show itself explores the concept of prosthesis as an extension of the physical ontology.
