Free of manipulation, Esser’s landscapes are simple in their composition. Taken over long exposures, earth, air, and water become indistinguishable in his photographs. He concentrates on the never-ending scope of the horizon in many of his works, which offers a romanticised representation of the purest state of natural beauty, through low horizon lines, the arrangement of soft colors, and vast cloudy skies. Accompanied by very precise titles, Esser’s works remain ambivalent and obscure.
