Luke Willis Thompson: Human

Kunsthalle Basel, Steinenberg 7, Basel

Luke Willis Thompson’s first solo exhibition in Switzerland entitled “Human” is a subjective historiography of another artist’s work, told through a silent 35mm color film. The moving image’s subject is a sculpture by artist Donald G. Rodney, My Mother. My Father. My sister. My Brother (1996-7). This work is comprised of his skin, dressmaking pins, and scotch tape, and was crafted during Rodney’s stay at Kings College Hospital, London, before he died from a pulmonary embolism, making this artwork his last finished piece. Thompson revisits Rodney’s work, as well as the intersection of themes of police and state violence, racism, and black and indigenous ontologies, that occur in their practices to create a meditative reflection on the legacies of race and genetic inheritance, chance and mortality.
