Out of the Matrix
The group show presents various British artists, each one focusing on different elements and media, which combined present a powerful discourse about the negation of democratic principles inherent in EU structures. The uncertainty of outcomes and affects of Brexit makes the artist feel like being in a limbo. They use their works to express their thoughts and thereby show that their worries could act as a blockage, but it can drive towards courageous experimentation too.
Whereas Brad Butler & Karen Mirza primarily navigate a minefield of power entities, Andrew Bick comments on the mists billowing about their structures, Sadie Murdoch thwarts the male-dominated narratives of Modernism, the video installation of Abigale Lane deals with life’s transitoriness, whereas Vincent Whiteman turns his gaze towards cosmic dimensions. This exhibition is rounded off by an oversized paper work by Julia Steiner, who forms a link between Basel and London.
