Arthur Jafa: A Series of Utterly Improbable, Yet Extraordinary Renditions

Julia Stoschek Collection, Leipziger Strasse 60

The exhibition, developed in partnership with Serpentine Galleries, London, presents the work the American artist and filmmaker Arthur Jafa, in his first exhibition in Germany, featuring Ming Smith, Frida Orupabo, and Missylanyus. Jafa’s research, expressed through a multidisciplinary practice, challenges the main assumptions about identity and race.

Arthur Jafa: A Series of Utterly Improbable, Yet Extraordinary Renditions refers to the artist’s interpretation of the aesthetics associated with Black being, inscribed in images, objects and artifacts. Jafa reconstructs these narratives, trying to reframe them in the present and to address the issue of how to identify and develop a specifically Black visual aesthetics in US culture.

The exhibition features also contents by three other artists: the photographer Ming Smith, @nemiepeba – the lnstagram feed of artist Frida 0rupabo – and content from the YouTube channel of Missylanyus. These three ‘guests’ are integral to Jafa’s presentation in the exhibition and acknowledge the influence of others within his own practice.
