An Opera for Animals
“An Opera for Animals” explores the highly contrived and controlled environment under the operatic setting, as a response to our contemporary reality and its virtual realities, artificial truths and the promise of increasingly active development of new technologies. In the show, animals are symbols and devices of representation, connecting the ancient beliefs to the futuristic forms.
The art of opera developed both in China and Europe as a reflection of realities but distinct in their styles. The show puts the historical roles played by museums, theatres and other platforms in a contemporary context, offering the operatic environment as a fertile ground for negotiating these histories and our common future. It also marks a prelude to a new partnership between Para Site, Hong Kong and Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai, which will be unveiled in Summer 2019.
